云南省宁蒗县永宁区的泸沽湖畔是纳西族一个分支——摩梭居住的地方。这儿仍然是一个传统的女儿国。还保留着母系氏族公社时期的一些特点，妇女的社会地位比男人高。
影片介绍了高明村尔其玛一家，这是个以妇女为中心的母系家庭。家长尔其玛主管家务，安排生产、生活、烘饭和分配食物。摩梭实行具有对偶婚特点的阿注婚姻。阿注就是同居的伴侣。对偶双方互称阿注，他们结合自由，不合意就分手。孩子生下来由母亲抚养，不单独组成家庭，通常是男子夜间到女家住宿，次日离开返回母家。如今这习俗已起变化，男女青年开始组织新家庭。摩梭的社会现象是人类历史发展中保留下来的一个片断。
