经国家主管部门批准，中央电视台于2014年在北京举办“2014CCTV钢琴、小提琴大赛”。该大赛由中央电视台音乐频道于2008年创办，每三年举办一次。曾成功推出了小提琴演奏家刘霄、钢琴演奏家沈文裕等一批新生代演奏人才。本届评委会由多位音乐家组成，刘诗昆、盛中国先生分别担任钢琴大赛、小提琴大赛评委会主席。大赛于2014年8月拉开帷幕。四十四场比赛在中央电视台音乐频道(CCTV-15)进行现场直播，并在央视网（CNTV）进行同步直播，海内外有数以千万计的观众观看此次音乐盛会。比赛设金、银、铜奖，要求参赛者具有一定的演奏技巧和音乐素养，注重对音色层次和对作品的整体掌控，同时还可与乐队进行精湛配合。
《乐上巅峰》是中央电视台2013年度重点创新栏目。是音乐频道自主研发的全国唯一一个大型器乐类音乐竞技形态栏目。栏目于2014年初在中央电视台音乐频道周末晚黄金时间播出。
《乐上巅峰》的主要特点是：零门槛，无国界，不限年龄、不限国籍、不限单人或组合，不分专业、业余，不限制音乐表现形式，面向全世界热爱音乐、敢于挑战、拥有梦想的大众敞开怀抱。
