从事卫星监测工作的格里和妻子玛格丽特离异后，搬出来独自生活。一天玛格丽特因工作繁忙，不得不将女儿玛蒂送往格里那里代为照看。在格里的办公室，玛蒂想要将自己的图画打印出来，却无意间打开了一份电子邮件。长达数十页的邮件内容被打印，邮件在被打印后便自动删除。玛蒂担心招来父亲的责骂，于是悄悄将打印出的纸张藏在了书包中。
深夜，几个神秘人闯入格里的家，仿佛在寻找什么东西。格里带着女儿连夜逃出，躲到了好朋友保罗家。格里马上报警，但警察到格里家后未发现任何有人闯入的迹象。几乎是与此同时，另一拨神秘人又来到了格里的公司，偷走了三台电脑，看门人被杀。警方将这一切与格里联系在一起，他们认为是格里偷走了电脑又杀死了看门人，为了掩人耳目制造了有人闯入家中的谎言。格里百口莫辩，警察对他实施了监控，同时格里也被公司停职。
