电影是1995年放映的电视版本，共分六集，全片充满了奇思异想，有着浓厚的超现实主义色彩，是一部名副其实的史诗片。电影情节虽然有些荒诞不经，但却准确地描绘了二战时期南斯拉夫的社会状况，大胆揭露了一些投机的战争英雄英勇事迹背后不为人知的真相。影片的基调是幽默和讽刺的，又十分活泼轻松，很欢快，甚至可以把影片当作喜剧来看。影片人物个性十分奔放，张扬，该片处处洋溢着创作者的激情。导演埃米尔·库斯图里卡处理史诗题材的天才手段展露无疑，由于该片深刻的讽喻，不少影评家将该片与俄国1995年的《毒太阳》相提并论。
The story follows piano professor Milan five years after his best friend, pop star Ranko White, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Milan decides to solve the mystery and finally discover what happened to White. Failing to get support and understanding from his family and friends, Milan develops a friendship with a stray dog.
本片故事发生在1941年，德国军队横扫欧洲期间。由两个即将前往贝尔格莱德的贫穷少年的歌唱开始，又从他们搭乘的公共汽车展开故事。形形色色的人坐上这部汽车，退役老军人、两个富人、新婚夫妇、司机父子。各种各样的意外引出了各种各样的故事、叙述和活动：在一个路口被军人拦住；在另一条陆上又被收取买路钱的农夫扎破车胎；在湖边休息时，又碰上了行进中的一个本国小分队，汽车被征用，回来后司机的儿子已经被强迫参军；退役军人的钱包掉在路上，乘客们却怀疑两个清贫的少年并把他们拳打脚踢。最后在德军飞机的轰炸下，汽车焚烧、倾倒，但两位满面污秽的少年仍然从车窗爬出，继续歌唱……贝尔格莱德之旅由此艰难地结束。
